Chip and Spray / Pothole Patching

We provide high quality chip and spray services, some call it chip seal which is a sprayed application of asphaltic binders followed by a single or double layer of aggregate chippings. Chip and spray can be done in a single seal or double seal, its a method used by most governments for surfacing roads, its cheaper and faster to do as compared to hot asphalt road surfacing which is bit challenging if the plant is for hot asphalt is far, this chip seal method is mainly used in rural areas or farms.
The final layer of stone chipping is sometimes covered by a fog spray, which helps to prevent whip-off.

This is mainly done to provide:

  • A waterproof cover to the underlying pavement
  • A safe all-weather, dust-free riding surface for traffic with adequate skid resistance
  • Protection to the underlying layer from the abrasive and destructive forces of traffic and the environment Single Seal and Double Seal

A double seal is a sprayed application of bituminous binder followed by a single layer of stone chippings, followed by a second spray application of bituminous binder and a single layer of smaller sized stone chippings or sand. The final layer of stone chippings is sometimes covered by a fog spray to prevent whip-off. Double seals can be made up from the following combinations of stone aggregate and sand:

  • 9,5 mm chips and sand
  • 13,2 mm chips and sand
  • 13,2 mm chips and 6,7 mm

A double seal is normally used as a first seal on a newly constructed where a more durable surfacing than a single seal is required. A double seal is applied to:

  • 2 Layer of stone chips on 1st spray
  • Existing substrate or base
  • Second layer of smaller stone chips
  • 2nd spray Fog spray if required

When patching a pothole, you first cut open the pothole, remove all the lose particles and address the base, that involves compaction of the base and supply of stablized filler material if the base is too damaged.

After that you leave the surface to settle before patching or sealing it with hot or cold asphalt.
